America needs a war every 20 years, to increase it's population state support. Each war provides a fair amount of vets who are willing to keep the struggle when home with particular discoursive methods.

We can basically classify the returning soldiers in two groups: the ones that reach power - most of the US Presidents are former combatants on wars, as well as senators, representants, & influent political people - and those who end up at a mental asylum - yup! potential serial killers, mass murderers, or just crazy wondering yoyos: the menu is extense.

So America all the time with its vets help to mantain state power by 2 means: schizophreniac patriotism (a.k.a. "productive messianism") and the good ol' fear.
